It appears the Adelaide 36ers are the first non-NBA team to win a preseason game (134-124 at the Phoenix Suns) in the U.S. since Fenerbahce beat Brooklyn in October 2015

The Nets finished 21-61 that season.

It is coming to the point in the offseason where every media outlet, podcast and writer is giving their award predictions so I thought it would be a good time to discuss it. I will be listing my top 3 for every award (as well as a Dark Horse candidate) and I will be explaining why I chose them there. I will also be making my finals prediction which will almost certainly be wrong but it is fun either way. I did them in order of least to most important imo for anyone wondering. I also encourage you to put your predictions in the comments and tell me what my worst prediction was.

COY:

1 - J. B. Bickerstaff

I chose J. B. as my coach of the year because I think that the Cavs will be really good and will probably make the biggest standings jump this year. He really showed his coaching prowess at the start of last season with his 3 big man lineup and he will probably keep it rolling this season with the team getting better. He should be able to show how good he is as a coach this season if he can keep this young team high in the standing.

2 - Michael Malone

The Nuggets have had a couple of tough breaks in the past few seasons and I think that this will be the season for them. Coach Michael Malone is among the best in the league and he will hopefully lead them to being a top 3 seed in the West. They have a good chance of being the best team in the Western Conference with them getting healthy and their additions this offseason. If they manage to be the top seed I would give it to him in a heartbeat.

3 - Tyronn Lue

Tyronn Lue has proven himself in the past 3 seasons as being one of the top tier coaches we have in the NBA. He was absolutely incredible in the 2021 playoffs where he led his team to 2 comebacks when they were down 2-0 and partially without Kawhi. He has a good chance as well as Coach Malone to lead his team to a top 3 seed which would automatically put him in the conversation. He also may deal with his stars load managing which would help his case somewhat.

DH - Joe Mazzulla

I don't think an interim coach has ever won a COY in NBA history but this could be a season where it is possible. With Ime Udoka banned for the season, Joe Mazzulla should step in and keep this team at the top of the conference. They got better this offseason and could just repeat what they did last season but that is somewhat unlikely. I don't think he will win it but there is the off chance that he could.

6MOY:

1 - Tyler Herro

The obvious choice for 6MOY is a Herro repeat and I cannot argue against it. He was far and away the best 6 man last season and shows no signs of being incapable of improving on that season. There will always be a ton of opportunity for him in Miami because their scoring is so shaky when it comes to their starting lineup. He will probably just rack up 6MOY awards for the foreseeable future which is why they should put a minutes limit for 6MOY.

2 - Kevin Love

I would love to see K Love win this award. I love his game and I was very happy to see him finally accept his role last season and star in it. I think that he has a solid chance as his role hasn't really change from this year to last year. While I would like to see him win it because it would be an upset and I am always rooting for the underdog (unless it conflicts with my team winning), I highly doubt it.

3 - Christian Wood

In my opinion Christian Wood actually has a really strong chance to be 6MOY but I am not confident that at some point in the season he won't play himself into a starting role. He obviously will be great for them especially as a spark of scoring off the bench but I am not sure he is happy with his role which could lead to low effort. I understand why they want to bring him off the bench but I would not be surprised if this reason doesn't hold up for the whole season.

DH - Bojan Bogdanovic

Bojan is another good candidate that I am not sure whether he will start or not. I would assume they would start their young guys but I could see a world where they run him at the 4 in their starting lineup. Dwane Casey was not afraid to just run a lineup of young players last season but Bojan is easily good enough to get put in that starting lineup over Bagley or over Stewart and slide Bagley to the five (I doubt that one).

MIP:

1 - Tyrese Haliburton

Tyrese Haliburton seems to be the obvious choice for this award. He should be able to do whatever he wants on this Pacers team and looked incredible after he got traded. He was averaging about 18/10/4 on the Pacers and I could see that increasing with more time to get used to his teammates and a more opportunity if he is given the keys which I project.

2 - RJ Barrett

I like RJ Barrett and I personally think he will have a big year. He finally has a good point guard who can feed him the ball. The one issue with his case is the fact that he might not be the number one option if Thibs choses Julius. I personally wouldn't do that because I think Julius is a bad fit for this team but who knows.

3 - Anthony Edwards

The current favorite to win MIP is Ant and I would not be surprised if he got the award. He averaged 22/5/4 last season and if he is put as the number one option he could easily increase that. I am a bit hesitant because I don't think he will be able to make some massive jump because he already averaged 21.5. Unless he manages to jump to like 30 it will be a hard award for him to win. Also in my opinion there is no reason a top 3 pick should win MIP in his 3rd year because everyone is expecting the jump.

DH - Collin Sexton

Collin Sexton is here for 1 reason and that is opportunity. This Jazz team has nobody that should be taking any shots away from him besides Clarkson who will probably be traded. He has already averaged 24 so he will have a similarly difficult case but he could have a Jerry Stackhouse type season where he just shoots every shot he gets and averages close to 30.

ROY:

1 - Paulo Banchero

The most obvious pick I will probably make in this entire post is Paulo for ROY. He was far and away the best player when he was on the court in summer league. This coupled with the fact that there is no one on the Magic that should be taking opportunity away from him and he is clearly the right pick. He also has a couple of good guards to feed him so he is the ideal candidate.

2 - Keegan Murray

Keegan has a much different case that is founded on the fact that he fits perfectly with the Kings which is new for Kings fans. He can stretch the floor and defend as well as push the pace. He also has a spoon feeder in De'Aaron Fox and this should help his case a lot. He could make a strong case as long as the Kings don't manage to screw him up like 85% of their young players this past decade (I do like the Kings just not their front office or development coaches).

3 - Jaden Ivey

I was really torn between putting Keegan or Jaden at 2 and decided it didn't really matter. Jaden has basically the exact same case as Keegan. They both fit their new teams really well, should get the starting spot and have a young point guard to spoon feed them easy buckets. I think I just have higher hopes for the Kings and I think Keegan should have an easier time adjusting to the NBA.

DH - Ochai Agbaji/Walker Kessler

To be honest I don't think there were any good dark horse candidates for the ROY so I picked the tandem of Ochai and Walker because they should have nothing but opportunity seeing as their team has basically committed to the tank. If they manage to trade Conley there is a chance Ochai could start which would be good for his candidacy but neither will probably be in the conversation.

DPOY:

1 - Giannis Antetokounmpo

I think the Bucks will get back to being a top 5 level defense this season especially with Brook Lopez coming back. Giannis as always will continue to play stellar defense and could make a push for his second DPOY. He will need Brook back so he can get back to his original role on defense which is being one of the best free safety type defenders in the league. He was still great last season playing basically center on defense but he will flourish in his true role.

2 - Rudy Gobert

There is not much to say about Rudy as a defender; He is really good at defense and has made every Jazz team for the majority of the past half decade a top 5 defense. He has just as good a chance of doing that this season on the Timberwolves and in fact a better chance because he is surrounded by better defenders. Ant should be the best perimeter defender he has played with in the past five years which should help him a ton.

3 - Bam Adebayo

Bam is a player who I love and was someone I was a huge fan of even before the 2020 season. I think I speak for all Bam fans when I say he is one of those players who you hate rooting for, let me explain. Every season we come in thinking this is his year and it never is. Jimmy says he would fine him for not taking 3's and he doesn't take 3s. He says he wants to shoot more and he doesn't but that is all offensive. He is still one of the best defenders in the league but I hope he can get this offense together because watching him do this every season is killing me.

DH - Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi should in theory still be a top defender in the league but there are a few good reasons I couldn't put him top 3. He will likely be load managing/coasting for a majority of the season especially since he is coming off a major injury and then step it up in the playoffs. He also is coming off that injury so there is a chance that he lost a bit of his defensive prowess. The biggest reason for me though is other defenders have just gotten better these past few years so he is no longer the clear best.

MVP:

1 - Joel Embiid

This is Joel's year to win MVP. With Jokic winning the last two MVPs and Giannis winning the two before voters fatigue should be working in Joel's favor. He was second in the last two MVP races and has the best team he has had in a while. He should be able to coast his way to an MVP as long as he can keep up what he was doing last season and he gets some help offensively from his roster.

2 - Nikola Jokic

I would love to see Jokic win his third MVP in a row because I would like to see something historical go down. I love Jokic's game and believe that he will probably have a better case at an MVP than Joel will but voters fatigue is a real thing and it unfortunately will be the reason he won't get his third in a row. His team will almost certainly be much better this season getting both Murray and Porter back and also because of their offseason additions.

3 - Luka Doncic

I am a shaky in choosing Luka because while I think he can statistically be MVP I am not sure he can get there from a team success standpoint. In my opinion losing Brunson was a huge loss for them this offseason and I am not extremely confident in the fit of Christian Wood. They will still be good but I doubt they will give it to him if he is not a top 4 seed which I don't see the Mavs being this season. (I actually think Giannis will be here but I wanted to switch it up.)

DH - LeBron James

I am completely out on the Lakers personally but if they manage to turn it around with Russ or they manage to find a trade for him this could be a good team. Bron should continue being really good and could will this team to a good record seeing as they were absolutely horrible last season but I am not confident. I think if they trade Russ his chances raise by a lot but I don't think even after that he can be top 4.

Finals Prediction and FMVP:

Prediction: 4-3 Bucks vs. Nuggets, FMVP: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Any finals prediction this far from the start of the season is really just a shot in the dark and is really just a fun conversation but I really like both of these teams coming into the season. I think that a healthy Bucks team is still the best in the East and I am someone who think Giannis would have 2 chips if Khris didn't go down in the playoffs last season. Similarly I think the Nuggets would have easily been a Conference Finals team last season if they had a healthy roster. I hope that the Nuggets can make the Finals because that would do wonders for Jokic's career and could propel him into the top 25 conversation. If somehow this is the Finals, I do think that the Bucks would win but it would be a tough series for either team. If the Bucks pulled it out Giannis would easily win FMVP.

In conclusion my Predictions are:

MVP: Joel Embiid

DPOY: Giannis Antetokounmpo

ROY: Paulo Banchero

MIP: Tyrese Haliburton

6MOY: Tyler Herro

COY: J. B. Bickerstaff

What are your predictions and what do you think about mine? Who did I miss, What was my worst pick, etc.
